Tourism remains one of the most productive industries for the Maltese economy, according to the latest reports. In September, the number of tourists arriving in Malta has registered the highest growth throughout the whole year. The tourist expenditure also rose significantly compared to the same period of 2014 which proves that tourism has strengthened its positon among the dominating industries in Malta.
The whole year was a good one for the Maltese tourism industry. However, September accounted for the largest number of tourists arriving in the country. Among these, approximately 170,000 came to the island for holidays, while approximately 12,000 came to do business in Malta. Compared to the same month of 2014, the number of tourists increased by 0.5%. Most of them came from EU countries.
The total income generated by the tourism industry in September alone was estimated at 195 million euros, a growth of over 5% compared to September 2014. In the first 9 months of the year, Malta accommodated nearly 1,5 million tourists which is once more a significant growth compared to the same period of the last year. The total expenditure during January and September 2015 was estimated at 1,318 million euros, 6.6% higher than the expenditure registered in the same period of 2014. The expenditure per capita also rose to almost 400 euros.
